Vintage signed SCHIAPARELLI N/E set 1960s red green goldtone - FREE SHIPPING

This remarkable vintage necklace and earring set by Schiaparelli, probably from the 1960s, is an elegant blending of traditional elements, unconventional material and modern execution.

The necklace features nine identical conical links which are imaginative assemblies of three distinct elements. The open backed cone-shaped core of each link is executed in a very finely detailed antique gold-tone filigree. At the base of each link is an oval-shaped, domed cabochon. These unusual cabochons are bright red with a striated surface and glittery gold veining. The cabochons are set into the filigree at an oblique angle. Atop each link is a sparkling, emerald green faceted teardrop. This creative combination of three disparate elements into a unique sculptural form is repeated in the clasp earrings.

This jewelry is of an unconventional design by a designer who defied convention and of a level of execution demanded by a true artist.

Both the necklace and the earrings are in excellent vintage condition. The cursive signature SCHIAPARELLI appears on the rear face of the center link of the necklace on an oval plaque. The overall length of the necklace is 16-1/2 inches (423mm). The nine decorative links occupy 8 inches (204mm) with approximately 4 inches of chain on each side. The hook and eye clasp allows the necklace to be worn at shorter lengths.

We presume that the necklace was designed to be worn with the emerald teardrops pointing upward to match the orientation of the earrings, but it could also be worn reversed with the red cabochons on top.

The face of the hinged clasp on one earring is also signed 'SCHIAPARELLI' in script. The same clasp also bears a patent number inscription 'PAL 2583988'. Each earring is 1-3/8 inches (34mm) tall by 5/8 inches (16mm) wide and 1/2 inches (13mm) in depth.

Elsa Schiaparelli is unquestionably one of the masters of 20th century fashion design. Her place in the upper strata of the couture hierarchy is rooted in her committed departure from classic fashion norms toward a modernist, flamboyant style symbolized most famously by her signature color - 'Shocking Pink'. Her collaboration with the Surrealist and Dadaist art movements is clearly reflected in her unconventional, sometimes whimsical designs. Having taken refuge in New York during World War II, Schiaparelli suspended her couture design efforts in the early 1950s and concentrated on costume jewelry and other products using licensed American vendors. Elsa Schiaparelli died in 1974, but Maison Schiaparelli continues today offering couture fashion in continuation of her distinct design aesthetic.
