would like to offer this famous 100%
authentic vintage Rolex Explorer II, model# 1655 -- known as Steve
McQueen Rolex -- with iconic cool extra hour orange hand.
The Explorer II model 1655 was introduced in 1971. The movement was
either the 1570 or the 1575, and essentially this particular model was
a GMT with a fixed stainless steel bezel. It had a distinctive dial
with an extra hour hand that was designed specifically for
speleologists, or cave explorers, who Rolex claimed, soon lose all
notion of time: morning, afternoon, day, or night. The extra hour
hand, or 24 hour, would tell the explorers whether the 4 on the dial
was 4:00 a.m. or 4:00 p.m. (16:00 hrs).
The watch initially when it was first marketed, the second hand was
straight and the extra hour hand was a bright orange. In 1974 a
luminous circle was added and models manufactured after 1975 the extra
hour hand was painted a bright red. The production of the 1655
continued until 1985 when it was discontinued.
This very collectible and ultra-popular timepiece is in great vintage
condition and impressive on every level.
Rolex explorer is the name which is synonymous with historical
challenges that exhibit the best in physical achievement and endurance.
We all know that in 1953 sir Edmund Hillary wore a Rolex explorer to
the summit of mt. Everest, a height of 29,035 feet. Climb the mountain
or take a path to move toward greater heights of success with this
Rolex Explorer II
The Rolex Explorer was designed and made to supply the members of the
1953 expedition to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Edmund Hilary and
Tenzing Norgay, on May 29, 1953, were the first to reach the summit of
Everest. While Rolex Explorer watches were supplied to all the members
of the expedition, as Rolex was the official supplier of the
expedition, Edmund Hilary chose to wear a Smith watch. Smith, an
English watchmaking company was also a sponsor of the 1953 Everest
Whether a Rolex or Smith watch made it to the top first, we will never
know. Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay, when asked who made it to the
top first, both answered 'it mattered nothing who made it to the top
first.' Both Rolex Explorer and Rolex Explorer II watch models are
designed for active and curious people whose profession involves
extreme conditions as well as for those who like nicely designed sports
watches with interesting history.
Rolex has many watch models that are designed for explorers and all of
these models were tested by Rolex in extreme conditions. For instance
Rolex Deepsea Special watch was fixed to the bathyscaphe Trieste when
it descended in Mariana Trench. The next day Jacques Picard sent to
Rolex the telegram that said that Rolex Deepsea withstood depth 11 000
remaining waterproof and functional.
Rolex Explorer II is the model that continues the lineup of its
celebrated predecessors. As well as Rolex Explorer, Rolex Explorer II
is one of the most popular Rolex models.
As well as GMT Master model this one is equipped with watch mechanism
with double time indication. Initially this model was designed for
speleologists who explore caves. Speleologists have to stay much time
in caves so they cannot always know whether it is day or night now.
That is why the watch helps the explorers to tell day from night. The
watch features a secondary 24 hour hand that helps explorers to tell if
the main hour hand is representing AM or PM.
Though the watch is designed for cavers, Rolex Explorer II was not only
liked by people who work in caves. It as well was very much liked by
everyone who prefers stylish and complicated watches of the best
Rolex Explorer II was released in 1971. The first models featured a
straight second hand and an orange 24 hour hand. Models that were
released in 1974 onward incorporated a luminous circle on the second
hand. Some short time later Rolex began releasing Rolex Explorer II
with red 24 hour hand.
Production of this model was discontinued in 1985, so now this model is
very valuable and collectible.
Rolex Explorer II is known as Steve McQueen’s watch. However Steve
McQueen never wore the Explorer II. In fact he wore Rolex Submariner
that had a very similar design to the Rolex Explorer II. The Submariner
produced in the period between 1959 and 1978 model was available
exclusively in UK. It is quite logical to suppose that
this McQUeen connection was what inspired the naming of the later
Explorer II as the Steve McQueen Rolex.
