ANTIQUE * EARLY 1900'S * ISLAMIC * KASHMIR/INDIA * PERSIAN * HANDMADE * CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL BOX * BIRD MOTIFS * 3.25"W x 3.25"D x 1.25"H.

Note: The box is very hard to photograph to capture the true delicacy of the work, the vividness of the red and the more subtle, but equally alive colors of the birds.

This piece comes from my paternal grandmother who was born in 1896. She was a jeweler who specialized in enameling and silversmithing. She was fortunate enough to be able to collect enamel pieces from all periods of time and from places all over the world. This box may have been a gift to her from her brother, born in 1894, who lived overseas most of his life working, travelling and collecting everything imaginable.

This antique champleve enamel box was made in the early 1900's, in Islamic Kashmir/India. The box top and sides are adorned with bird motifs. It measures 3.25"W x 3.25"D x 1.25"H.

Lisa states the box is "brass that is molded, then filled with enamel in the cavities to create the lovely design, then fired, then finished with a silver overlay."

Attilio states, "The work appears of simple artisanal, hand mechanical worked". He believes the box itself is copper, with a silver layer. "I can see red metal where are jumping of enamel. Brass is yellow and difficult to be enameled." And most importantly, he says, "The value of the piece is not artistic but artisanal."

Many thanks to the following people for their time, help and invaluable

Champleve: A Decorative Enameling Technique

Champleve is an enameling technique in the decorative arts, or an object made by that process, in which troughs or cells are carved, etched, die struck, or cast into the surface of a metal object, and fill the depressions with pulverized vitreous enamel. The raised metal lines between the cut out area form the design outline. The piece is then fired until the enamel fuses, and when cooled the surface of the object is polished. The uncarved portions of the original surface remain visible as a frame for the enamel designs....

Champleve is distinguished from the technique of cloisonne enamel in which the troughs are created by soldering flat metal strips to the surface of the object....

Champleve comes from the French for "raised field", "field" meaning background, though the technique in practice lowers the area to be enameled rather than raising the rest of the surface...

The technique has been used since ancient times, though it is no longer among the most commonly used enameling techniques. Champleve was practiced in the Celtic areas of Western Europe in the Roman period. It flourished in the Rhine Valley near Cologne and in Belgium in the 11th-12th century.

Artist and Artisan

"What's the difference between an artist and an artisanr....Artist essentially refers to the making of tangible or intangible products as an expression of creativity and imagination for purely aesthetic reasons. An artisan, meanwhile, though spurred by the same impulses, produces crafts, which, though they may be acquired only for decoration, are designed to be practical....

Therefore, though some tension between artist and artisan -- between producers of art and designers of crafts -- may exist because of a perceived differential in their relative cultural status, the technical definitions are just that: precise distinctions not in quality or artistic achievement but in function"

By Mark Nichol From dailywritingtips.com/artist-vs-artisan

Artisan

Artisan (from French: artisan, Italian: artigiano) or craftsman (craftsperson) is a skilled manual worker who makes items that may be functional or strictly decorative, including furniture, sculpture, clothing, jewellery, household items and tools.... Artisans practice a craft and may through experience and aptitude reach the expressive levels of an artist."

From Wikipedia

Kashmir:
"Kashmir (Kashmiri: ; H / i: ; Hindi: u: ; Urdu: hr: ; Uyghr: ina: ; Shina: he no) is the northwestern region of the India subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the term Kashmir geographically denoted only the valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. Today, it denotes a larger area that includes the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir (which consists of Jammu, Kashmir Valley, and the Ladakh regions), the Pakistan-administered territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Chinese-administered regions of Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract."
