MYKONOS WARMTH IS MORE THAN SUN By JAN SHANNON; JAN SHANNON is a consultant for A.F.S. International/Intercultural Programs.

Published: September 1, 1985
Mykonos, a tiny speck of an island in the central Aegean, is known for brilliant sunlight, turquoise sea, blue-trimmed, whitewashed cubic houses and windmills on the cliff. Danish, German, Dutch, French and English are heard more than Greek in the summer months. Jet setters mingle with backpackers off the ferries and day visitors from tourist ships that anchor just outside the harbor.
Shopping is almost unavoidable in Mykonos, where shopkeepers tempt tourists by hanging their wares outside the tiny stores on the first floors of their houses. The best buys, however, seem an incongruity to those who go seeking the sun.

The best handwork is wool: hand knit woolen sweaters in a variety of styles, patterns and weights and hand woven woolen jackets....they are usually sold by the women who made them. Most styles can be worn by either men or women and some come in children's sizes.
Mykonos women always seem to be knitting. Shopkeepers sit in their doorways, knitting sweaters while waiting for customers to make their selections. Old women sit with friends, talking and knitting, on the porches of their homes. One can peer into the open doors of tiny houses and see women watching television to the accompaniment of clicking knitting needles. They turn out sweaters at an amazing rate, an accomplished knitter being able to complete a single-color fisherman knit with its many different stitches in just a day and a half. More complex patterns with several colors may take up to three or four days.

Sweaters are available in several styles, the most popular being the long-sleeved crew-neck knitted of heavy wool yarns on large needles. These come in a variety of styles: simple single-stitch, single-color sweaters, fisherman and bold geometrical patterns .... Cardigan sweaters, though not as popular, can be found with similar designs....

Sweaters are made for climates where the winters are colder than in most of Greece. Favorite colors are gray or beige with brighter color accents....the sweater you are bargaining for may represent four days of work for the woman who made it and that the same sweater would probably cost more than $100 in New York (1985)...."

Mykonos early human inhabitants were Carians, followed by Ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Cretans and Ionians. In ancient times, Mykonos, due to its proximity to the then highly populated island of Delos (situated about 1.2 miles away), became very important as a supply island and possibly as a getaway location for Delian citizens.

In Greek mythology, Mykonos was the location of the battle between Zeus and the Titans and the island was named in honor of Mykons, son of Anios who was a son of Apollo and nymph named Rio.

The island is composed primarily of granite. Quality clay and barite were also mined in the eastern side of Mykonos until the l
