Fashion designer Julia Korol gets around. Though currently based in London, she was born in Ukraine and spends much of her time travelling between Los Angeles, New York and Paris (Julia recently showed her first collection at Paris Fashion Week). Her background in fine art and photography informs her work which features bold yet feminine prints and structured, tailored design. Julia is what we'd call the next 'big thing' - her line is currently stocked at Barneys in New York and she's just been picked up by Harvey Nichols in London.
It couldn't come soon enough for the designer who mixes fine art and electrifying prints with aplomb. Korol's work focuses on kaleidoscopic trompe l'oeil prints, combining her art background with a refreshing take on working with textiles to create stunning feminine prints.
The next chapter looks extremely promising, Korol is soon to release her debut women's wear line with a focus on the stunning prints that have brought her to the fore. The collaboration with Ed Hardy's ex Vice President of Marketing and now Korol's business partner, Qualid 'Q' Ladraa, will see a selection of dresses and skirts staying true to her philosophy of clean lines, perfect tailoring and structured designs with, as Korol states, "insane prints". The prints maybe insane, but this girl has her head firmly screwed on - next time fashion week comes around Julia Korol's show will surely be one of the most popular to get an invite for.
My background has allowed me a much broader cultural understanding. I have always been interested in fashion and art and my mother was someone who really thought me of their importance. Since she was a little girl, she had the experience of growing up in two different countries and being immersed in two completely different cultures. It certainly contributed to growing up quickly. It translated into her work being very deep and emotional. Every print has a special meaning to me that one could probably trace to those experiences.
