MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE WATCH:

The hallmark of independent brand Marvin is executing simple designs well. The Malton collection is the core of its offerings, and sitting between the most basic three-hand Malton models and the more complex regulator watches is the Malton 160 M116. The dial is clean and easy to read, the design balances modern and classic elements, and the power reserve indicator adds visual interest without making things cluttered.
Marvin is one of those brands with a history going back to the mid-nineteenth century (1850 to be exact) that has changed hands many times over the years. Current owner and CEO Cecile Maye seems to take the marque's history seriously, having amassed a large collection of vintage Marvin pieces from which she draws inspiration for the new pieces. Modern Marvin watches do not look like reissues of the vintage pieces, but rather a continuation of the same design principles. Clean, accessible design makes for easy to wear watches with enough quirky personality to keep them interesting.

The Malton 160 M116 is a perfect example of this concept. It starts with a basic three-hand layout, but adds a small date window and a prominent asymmetrical power reserve indicator to the mix. When you first look at the M116, the 42-hour power reserve indicator is what immediately jumps out - it takes up most of the dial between 5 o'clock and 9 o'clock. But it's the little details that really make the M116.

First off is the 42mm round Malton case that you will find housing many of Marvin's watches. The sculpted sides of the steel case are mostly brushed, with highly polished edges highlighting the shape of the lugs. The recessed sides of the lugs add a lot of depth to the appearance of the watch, and running your fingers over the case you really get a sense of just how well this detailing has been designed.

Moving back to the dial itself, there is a printed railroad style minutes track around the outer edge, punctuated by little printed diamonds at each hour. Also at each hour is an applied baton and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 there are very Teutonic looking roman numerals. Typically you might expect to see the date window replace the numeral at 3 o'clock, but here it is set in from the numeral nicely, balancing out the power reserve indicator a little.

Looking at the even finer points, both the white and grey dials options for the M116 are grained, which you can just barely see when the light hits them right (a gloss black is available as well). This is one of those little things that goes a long way in making a dial like this look great. Also, the little diamond by the power reserve indicator at 8 o'clock is Marvin's signature red, matching the strap lining and the crown on the winding rotor.

Through the display back you can see the SWISS ETA 2897 movement ticking away. Though finished cleanly and with Marvin signatures, this is the only part of the M116 that doesn't offer a lot of detailed visual interest. It's clear that Marvin has decided to keep movement finishing more restrained in order to maintain the balance of design and affordability that is its priority.
