ABOUT BETH SCHAEFFER:
"Beth Schaeffer, design director of Fair Winds Trading company, founder of the Bluma project, and abstract painter, is a woman of many talents. Her ability to combine the art/fashion industry with philanthropy is progressive and necessary in an increasingly global and interdisciplinary world. After a 2007 visit to Rawanda and Ghana, Schaeffer was fashionably inspired by local Rwandan women's clothing and jewelry. The local women's colorful hues and cheerful patterns were unlike any textiles available for American women. However, Schaeffer believed that American women would be inspired by the prints and colors just as she was. Therefore, Schaeffer developed the, 'Bluma Project'.... Schaeffer's development of the Bluma Project, began from the concept that, 'little things can mean a lot and that women can support each other globally.' This idea has been successfully carried out by other artists such as Diane von Furstenberg, Donatella Versace and other woman...."
"'I guess I'm just the entrepreneurial type,' laughs Beth Schaeffer, who designed her own clothing label for fifteen years before pursuing a passion for painting and, most recently, for jewelry-making. Founded one year ago, her latest venture, Bluma Project, specializes in African-inspired jewelry and a small range of textiles crafted by hand at women's cooperatives in Rwanda and Ghana....
'I'm working on developing a group here in Brooklyn, because I think there's a lot of people here who need work as well,' she explains. 'There are amazing designers and artisans here in Brooklyn, even moms who need work but are stay at home and need to work from home, so I'm trying to develop the Made-in-the-USA collection'...."
