Mireya Navarro shows you how to plan an eco-friendly celebration
There’s a trifecta of fabulous books about green weddings on the market, and I love each of them like a mother loves her children –unable to choose a favorite, but wont to go on and on about what makes each one special and beautiful. <!–more–> Mireya Navarro’s Green Wedding: Planning Your Eco-friendly Celebration is one that makes me especially proud because it shows that green weddings are an important and legitimate way that real couples are reducing their environmental impact. This book makes clear the enormous opportunity that we have to live by and share our sustainable values when hosting a wedding.
From the beautifully produced and designed layout, to the warm, clear and concise prose, to the informed-yet-nonjudgemental green philosophy, this book is a planning must for conscious couples. And Green Weddingmakes a great gift for a newly engaged friend (or yourself!) The easy modern design makes it a great coffee table book, as demonstrated here on my very own coffee table, with my very own seventeen-year-old pooch in clear agreement.
I asked author Mireya Navarro, an environmental writer for The New York Times Style, what she thinks of Recycled Bride and the concept of wedding resale. She said:
The wedding budget is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, most of us will handle in our lifetime when planning a celebration. So much of what we buy for a wedding is for one-time use — from the dress to decorations. By recycling, you are extending the life of the item and avoiding new products and the energy that goes into making them from scratch. In this day and age, there is really no excuse for a dress or a centerpiece to languish in a closet collecting dust. Pass it on!
Sing it, sister.
The best part about Green Wedding is that it uses a lot of examples and photos from real weddings, featuring the kinds of couples that you could imagine being friends with. It’s a nice contrast to the slick, highly choreographed images in wedding magazines, or the impeccably coordinated and terribly hip productions featured on wedding blogs (Yes, even on this one sometimes!) The featured stories and photos are inspiring because they look like weddings we’ve all been to, just a little greener, a touch less frivolous, with more consideration given to the environment. The authentic beauty of many of the featured real weddings here are completely refreshing and eye-opening.
