Eco-Honeymoon Heaven

A wellness retreat in Nicaragua with celebrity trainer & author Alycea Ungaro

Alycea Ungaro, the founder of Real Pilates and trainer to New York’s fittest A-listers, is hosting a week-long holistic retreat at Aqua Nicaragua, a sustainable resort and spa located on the breathtaking Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. Reading about this program made me wish I could turn back time for a honeymoon re-do! But alas, my ‘mooning days are long past, and I can only sit and swoon over the gorgeous pics and amazing details being planned for the lucky couples who attend. <!–more–>

The experience is called Real Wellness, and is billed as a way to “create a lifetime of wellness with your partner.”  The idea of a honeymoon that actually promotes health, rather than indulgence, is pretty unique. Since most of us plan our honeymoons to unwind from all of the excitement and stress of wedding planning, we often go straight to a conventional resort, where we eat and drink ourselves silly, sleep in and lounge on the beach, and indulge in less-than-healthy behaviors to relax. We return to daily life fat and happy, but not all that healthy.

Aqua Nicaragua will inspire you to be active! Aside from twice-daily Pilates classes with Alycea Ungaro, the resort offers outdoor adventures such as surfing, kayaking, fishing, sailing, snorkeling, horseback riding, hiking, and zip lining through the treetops. The food is all local, sustainable and organic. In addition to creating its own oven-baked breads and artisanal cheeses in-house, the resort boasts a bio-dynamic organic garden, featuring heirloom herbs and vegetables that can only be found in that part of the world. And the spa offers a range of healing arts and therapies including Acupuncture, Tui Na Massage, Watsu Water Massage, Reflexology, and Reiki energy healing.

The cool thing about Nicaragua is that is was off the tourism map for years because of its reputation as a war-torn nation. So it still has an undiscovered feeling, and hasn’t been overdeveloped, making it a perfect spot for eco-tourism.

  1. Absolutely love the sunset photos. Your blog is wonderful too – love the eco chic ideas. Staying at an eco resort for your honeymoon is a great idea. I think many would be surprised at how many beautiful options there are around the world.
