Alicia, congrations on the great reviews you’ve been getting for your performance in Time Stands Still on Broadway! Do you have a favorite cold weather dish to indulge in while living in New York this winter? And how do you handle exercise and self-care when it’s too chilly to be outdoors?

I like to get all bundled up and enjoy the weather outside. Winter can be tricky because of how early it gets dark and just how cold it is! If you are feeling depressed keep warm, and nourish your spirit with all the amazing healing foods in The Kind Diet that you can get your hands on. Relax and practice patience, as Spring is just around the corner. Let yourself go deep inside yourself. That’s what winter is for.

Okay, confession time: What’s your biggest un-Kind weakness? Do you ever indulge in a mocha latte, watch bad reality TV, or skip yoga to sleep in?

I often skip yoga. In fact, I have not exercised in two months, as my current schedule on Broadway has been insane. But that’s the beauty of The Kind Diet! You can “falafel off” as I like to say, and still look great and feel great if you eat well and get a walk in here and there.

We love your EcoTools earth-friendly cosmetics brushes and bags. What made you decide to launch the line?

I became a fan of EcoTools, and we collaborate really well. It’s such a great partnership. There is also such a need for these cosmetic products, as there really is nothing else like it out there. Our entire line, Eco tools by Alicia Silverstone, is cruelty free, earth friendly, inexpensive, and they’re completely gorgeous products.

Can you recommend some of your other favorite green beauty products, clothing labels, and household products?

There are so many…for face products, I love Tammy Fender, Suki, Weleda, Jurlique, and I like Kiss My Face, Giovanni, and Desert Essence shampoos and conditioners. For makeup, I like La Bella Donna mascara, and Josie Maran cosmetics, and Gabriel Organics. For cleaning supplies, I use Seventh Generation, Bon Ami, Ecover laundry soap, Mrs. Meyers hand soap. For clothes and shoes, it’s Stella McCartney, the organic line from Alternative Apparel, and jackets from The Battalion. But in general, I try to buy all my clothes used from cute vintage shops.

Hey, us too! And we think that buying and selling gently used wedding items on RecycledBride.com is another way of living The Kind Life. Do you have any other recommendations for Recycled Bride members about making consumer choices that will reduce their environmental impact?

Just buy most of your clothes used. That’s what I do. Also, use all recycled paper products, and get a water filter so that you don’t have to use any more plastic water bottles.

What about sustainable travel? Can you tell us your best honeymoons and vacation tips for couples who want to live The Kind Life?

I think that wherever you want to go can be kind. Just make sure that the menu has food ingredients that sound good. Also, call ahead and ask the chef if he’s willing to hook you up and get creative. Ask them what ingredients they have around. For example, we went to Fiji with friends recently, and called ahead and asked the hotel what ingredients they had in their kitchen, and what they brought in locally. It turned out that they had a local version of bok choy and lots of rice. So I brought some seeds with me, as well as some ume vinegar. I also brought some other tricks of mine. I ended up having rice and bok choy and salads the whole time, and they had really good home cooked food there as well. It was perfect! They let me put my own stuff in their fridge, and go into the kitchen and whip up meals. Our honeymoon was much more fancy. The chef would tell me what they had in the kitchen, and I could tell him what I felt like eating!

Thank you so much, Alicia! We appreciate you taking the time to chat with Recycled Bride.

My pleasure!

  1. It is my own very first time i actually go to right here. I ran across so many entertaining stuff in your blog site, especially its chat. From the a lot of remarks with your content, Maybe I am not the only 1 having all of the pleasure listed here! Sustain the good perform.

  2. I want a copy of the KIND DIET because I believe that the right food can MAKE me “kind”: and “k”ompassionate, “k”aring, “k”onsiderate : food governs emotions and I truly want to not just heal my body but liberate the love, laughter and LIGHT that I know are buried within me, somewhere, hidden in a marsh of anger aggression and apathy that a devitalized deHUMANIZED diet of processed junk foods has created in my body.. my soul is STAGNATING in this SWAMP and I know no shrink and no doctor can liberate it, but maybe the right food CAN..

  3. As a new mom, it’s becoming amazingly clear to me that everything I bring into my home and put into my mouth, directly affects my child, the well-being of my family and the well-being of the planet. I’m already a vegetarian, but I have a long way to go to in perfecting what I eat and the lifestyle I lead. I would love to receive a copy of this book because I think it will help me in my journey towards improving my own, and my family’s, health and happiness and hopefully help me to teach my child the importance of our everyday decisions. Thanks for the great interview!

  4. Thank you SO much for sharing this terrific interview with Alicia… she is my greatest hero! I’ve been vegetarian for 12 years along with my husband. We decided to go completely vegetarian just before I got pregnant with our son, who is now 11 and has never eaten meat or eaten anything with a face!

My primary concern in life has always been doing my absolute best and dedicating my life to protect the needy and the voiceless, the truest underdogs of our world, especially all of our furry friends. I’ve volunteered and worked as a veterinary technician, assistant and emergency animal rescuer for my entire life. I spent two months living in a parking lot in New Orleans immediately following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, rescuing animals who were left behind, trapped inside their devastated homes or abandoned completely. It changed my life, and my families’ life, forever.

Since returning home from that experience, I have worked as a virtual school teacher to our son and done my best to promote his own charitable efforts. First, we helped a fellow classmate of his, Zach Bonner, age 12, with his own foundation (The Little Red Wagon Foundation) and walks for awareness for homeless children in this country. We walked more than 500 miles with him and loved every moment of it.

But then my husband suffered a severe stroke, leaving him disabled and needing me to stay home to help with his daily needs. So Dylan forged ahead with his own charitable ideas to help the furry ones, setting up his own national service project called Cans4Pets (Cans4Pets.tk). In short, we walk to collect empty aluminum cans to turn in for cash that we donate to local animal rescues. It helps the environment, cleans up our neighborhoods and helps needy, homeless animals!

I’m hoping to receive a copy of this book because we simply cannot afford it otherwise. I’ve been searching the Internet for recipes and tidbits of information about this absolutely wonderful eating plan, but we have barely enough money to pay our own bills since my husband’s stroke. In fact, that event and its repercussions caused us to go into foreclosure on the home of our dreams right before Christmas and now we are barely managing to keep our heads above water in a tiny apartment without a running vehicle. Luckily, we are within 1/2 mile of the grocery store, so I get plenty of exercise making trips back and forth with my backpack to carry the groceries!

Thank you for considering myself and my family for receipt of such a helpful, life-affirming book and most of all, for showing us just how truly beautiful life can be! A very big, very special thank you to Alicia for writing this book! She’s already one of our all-time favorite people and now we have even more reason to sing her praises! We are truly indebted to her for this amazing opportunity!

  5. I would love to win a copy of Alicia’s book, “The Kind Diet.” My friend just bought the book and shared it with me today. I have been Vegetarian and Vegan for many years. I love food that nourishes the body, mind and spirit and I feel Alicia’s book has just that. I cook everyday for myself and my family. We rarley go out to eat so cookbooks are my friend and inspiration. If I win this book I will promise to share the food I cook with my daughter’s preschool and our friends. I need more “Vegan” inspiration so I can stay healthy and happy and share my experience with all that want to know. Thank you

  6. Don’t think I have the most inspiring post. I honesly am just a vegetarian out uninspired in the kitchen and looking for something that is equally good and tasty.

  7. I would love to win a copy of Alicia Silverstone’s book, The Kind Diet. I saw her interview on the View and became intrigued with how her health issues improved. I have one daughter who decided to become a vegetarian but I would like her to learn more about her food choices to be healthy. This book sounds as if it would give her good advice and I would like to try some of the recipes also. I have another daughter who is getting married later this year and her lifestyle is hectic. It seems as if Alicia is full of never ending energy. I would like to share the book with her also so she can consider some changes in her diet. Thanks for the interviews with Alicia and for the chance to win a book.

  8. Just got done reading your great interview with Alicia as well as watching the interview — I already own the book and it’s helped me and my family eat better and be more healthy. It’s a great idea to giveaway her books for free as they will help other, just like they helped me and my family. Thanks to RB and Alicia.

  9. I would love to win this book to further educate myself on transferring into a vegan diet, and also helping my friends and family do the same. So much disease runs in my family, and I want to stop that so that I can keep my loved ones around me for a very long time.

  10. Listening to you discuss The Kind Diet on Oprah with such excitement & enthusiasm undoubtedly convinced me that I want to own a copy of your book!! I only eat chicken & fish, but after watching you on Oprah talk about delicious chicken substitutes at the Whole Foods store, it makes me want to try them right away! I would love to try out your recipes! They look & taste so yummy on your website!! My ex-boyfriend influenced me to become semi-vegetarian, and for that I am extremely grateful. I practice The Law of Attraction (The Secret changed my life!) every day, & I would love to apply your ideas from your book into my lifestyle! Ask. Believe. Receive. “I am attracting The Kind Diet!” #lawofattraction

  11. I was once very overweight (about 60 pounds), and I knew I wanted to change my life. Last year, I started eating healthier and exercising more. I’ve dropped 40 pounds and am having troubles dropping the last 20, so I’ve been trying to change to a vegetarian lifestyle along with eating more organically. So far, I feel great, and I think I’d really enjoy reading Alicia’s book. She’s very inspiring to me and makes me remember why I’m doing this for myself and my future.

I’m also getting married on August 6th of this year, and any help I can get to feel my best on that day is very appreciated.

Thanks for having this interview and giveaway!

  12. I am a newlywed and my husband has some food allergies. I am always looking for new recipes to try that are healthy for both of us. Many things he can eat are vegetarian. This would be a great asset to my cookbook collection!

  13. I would also like to add that I live in a house on my college campus that houses 50 girls and we get to live here for lower rates than traditional campus housing for cleaning and cooking and making our house a community. I am a member of an 8 person “healthy” kitchen where one girl is a vegetarian. I love to eat vegetarian and I would love to be able to share the information and recipes from the kind life with my kitchen mates, in order to create healthier lifestyles. It is so important to start out right when you are just learning what it means to cook for others, and care for yourself as well as keep a budget!

  14. I have been a member of the kindlife.com for about 3 months now and I am so inspired by all of the change Alicia is bringing upon her readers. I have been flirting with vegetarianism and vegan-ism for a while and I would love to have this tool! Being a college student I could really use a free copy! I would like to get myself into the healthiest shape I can be for my last few years here and then for my wedding which won’t be coming up too long after graduation! I really believe in everything the kind diet and Alicia are doing for the world and I want to be a part of it!

  15. I would love a copy! I’ve just graduated college (december!!) and I’m starting my new “adult” life. I’ve lost 60 lbs since January 2009 and I’ve been considering going vegan for a long time, for a variety of reasons. I am a big fan of Alicia’s transformation and I would really love to read her perspectives and her strategies for making the change, as well as get started with a few recipes and tips! Help me lose the last 30 lbs to complete my transformation! http://www.sweateveryday.wordpress.com!

  16. thank you for this give away! i’ve heard so many good things about this book, and after reading the interview on oprah i decided to jumpstart my 10-year vegetarian stint and take the plunge to go full-on vegan. a few weeks into it, now, and i’m loving it! the benefits are awesome and i’d love to read the book to learn more about this new lifestyle, health benefits, recipes, and be further inspired. thanks!

  17. I’m so happy I discovered Alicia’s community, The Kind Life, and her book, The Kind Diet. I remember the day I decided to give up eating meat in August 2009. It was prompted by the death of my beloved cat. I had an “A-ha!” moment while in the vet’s office, after having just put Chicken (yes, that was her name) to sleep. It occurred to me at that moment that I would never eat meat again, because my kitty cat was the same as any other animal — a cow, pig, turkey, bird, or lamb. Incidentally, several days later, I stumbled upon a 944 magazine that featured Alicia’s animal rights activism and work in the green movement. That’s where I heard about The Kind Diet.

Within several months, I gave up fish. I also became a regular customer at M Cafe in LA, where while waiting for my yummy lunch to arrive, I perused through The Kind Diet. Aside from being a beautifully designed book, Alicia’s message and voice rang through the pages. I decided that I would give up dairy and all its forms too. I’m going vegan!

I would be a proud owner of The Kind Diet. Though I don’t own it yet, I’ve been telling everyone who’s interested in healthy eating and the environment about it — and how fabulous it is!

Alicia is an inspiring individual. She has inspired me, and I hope to inspire others too!

  19. i would love to win and give -the kind diet- to my mom. she is a fierce meat-eater and although she loves and eats vegetables she doesn’t understand eating a plant-based organic diet (no matter how hard i try to sell her on it).

alicia mentioned in the interview that the book does not have an animal’s rights stance and that is something that would be appealing to my mom. if my mom understood that she could look & feel younger by choosing the right foods, i’m sure she would want to try. she also loves to cook and i know there are supposed to be some amazing recipes in the book.

  20. For years I have tried to explain to people why I eat the way I do. Alicia explains it so wonderfully in talking about the Kind Life. Can’t wait to read this book and try her recipes. Also like others there’s quite the wait list at my library!

  21. I’ve been vegetarian for almost 6 years now. I credit vegetarianism with helping me overcome a difficult battle with an eating disorder. Since becoming vegetarian, I have felt much healthier and happier. I have always been curious about the benefits – both mental and physical – of being vegan. I’ve attempted to make the the transition to veganism several times but have not succeeded in making it stick. Some of my excuses were just that – excuses. But I think the real reason is that I view veganism as restricting, as giving up my favorite foods, and that brings back the memories of my eating disorder. From what I’ve seen so far, I believe that Alicia’s approach to healthy eating will remind me of what I’m getting, not what I’m giving up.

  22. The reason I would love getting my hands on one of Alicia’s books is because I’m having trouble getting one of my owne. The reason I want this book is because I would love nothing better then to change my life forever and be kind to animals the planet myself and the ones around me as well.
Alicia Silverstone is a big inspiration to motivate a person to keep on going in getting what they want in life and being healthy. There is nothing more I would love then to change my life and save animals and planet earth and even myself. I would love to learn all sorts of delicious recipes that I know I would love I’ve been to a health store and bought some of the things you showed on you’re website and would love to get some more ! if I could win a copy of this book I will cherish it fore ever :) you are beautiful Alicia keep up you’re wonderfull work!

  23. I would love this book. I’ve been a vegetarian for 23 years and have been transitioning to vegan living. I’ve lost 50 pounds in the past year and would love some new, healthy, animal-free recipes to help me continue losing weight. Alicia rocks for showing people that celebrities don’t have to be be selfish and self-absorbed! Looking like her is a great advertisement for being animal- and Earth- friendly!

  24. I would love to have the book because I believe that you’re never too young to start eating healthy. Even though I’m only a teen, I believe that I should have a balanced diet of junk food and healthy foods too!

  25. I have heard a lot about ‘the kind diet’ and have been eager to try it out. New Year’s resolution is to live a healthier and more eco-friendly lifestyle starting with curbing my meat intake and this book would definitely help me achieve my goal by incorporating more delicious vegan meals into my diet. Would love to win this book! Alicia is such an inspiration on how to find balance and health in your daily life.

  26. I would love to read Alicia’s book and learn how we can be more healthy and lose weight at the same time.

  27. My family & I are currently in the stages of going from pesatarian to vegan. My husband is getting bored with the vegan recipes I have been cooking & is desiring more diverse foods. This would be a great help for us and our almost-2 year old daughter!

  28. After hearing my best friend rave about this book for ages, I’m dying to get my paws on a copy! As a vegetarian who strives for a kinder diet, it might be a perfect stepping stone for me to move away from my reliance on dairy. My broke-ass has so many health problems, maybe this could help!

  29. I am considering changing from a quasi-vegetarian lifestyle to a dedicated vegan life. I used to work for a poultry processing plant and it opened my eyes dramatically. I know what to live my life consciously. This book has been on my radar for quite awhile and I would just love a copy!

  30. The countdown is on; just over eight months to go until I walk down the aisle to say “I do,” and as I make my way there—dress shopping on Craigslist, searching thrift stores for the perfect vases & glasses to use as centerpieces, and combing through etsy as I go—one of my top resolutions is to take good care of myself.
I read parts of The Kind Diet one day after I found it at Barnes and Noble, and instantly fell in love with Alicia’s no-nonsense approach to the topic of cleaner eating. Unlike other books I’ve read on the same subject, The Kind Diet didn’t feel preachy; I felt like I was sitting down with a friend who simply wanted to inform me about her lifestyle & leave me to make my own decision.
Having my own copy of The Kind Diet will be a great (early) start for the new direction my life will take after I become a Mrs. in October; & the more time I have to practice the yummy recipes (especially the peanut butter cups I saw made on ‘Oprah’ last week!), the healthier my life will be by the time I cross the threshold from “Miss” to “Mrs.”

  31. I’ve heard so many good things about this book. Unfortunately, there are 36 people ahead of me for the book at our local library, which works out to having to wait 9 years to read the book if every library patron keeps the title for three weeks. Thank you for this giveaway! I’d love to read it sooner ;)
