On the estate formerly owned by Karen Blixen; played by Meryl Streep in the Academy Award-winning film "Out of Africa", there is a plot of land on which a small factory stands. In 1975, "Kazuri", which means "small and beautiful' in Swahili, began with 2 Kenyan women, and later many more women from villages around Nairobi; mostly single mothers, who were in dire need of regular income and employment to feed their families. Today, Kazuri---this coalition of women, is known for their beautiful handmade and hand painted ceramic beads and pottery --- and their families and villiages are fed. Their wares reflect the culture and wildlife of Kenya, painted in rich deep colors. --This piece is an example of the beauty, quality and nobility of their work and their cause. Kazuri continues to breathe its Mission: To provide and sustain employment opportunities for the disadvantaged members of Kenyan society. Wear this piece and share the story of the empowerment of women; the story of Kazuri.
