England: A Destination Wedding Like No Other

Wedding Locations

Destination weddings have been a popular wedding choice for quite a while now.  A wedding abroad really feels like an event, taking you far from your day to day life and allowing you to begin your new life together in style. <!–more–>

country estate wedding

The beach wedding, once the perfect romantic location for a unique ceremony, has lost a little of its impact through popularity, but fear not! There are endless ways to make your destination wedding a little bit different. Think beyond tropical destinations and beach venues to make your wedding stand out from the crowd and create the wedding of your dreams.

The romance of an English country wedding is unrivalled. Dusty pink roses, delicate lace dresses, china tea cups, and colourful bunting all combine to capture the timeless elegance of times gone by. You’ll walk down the aisle in a haze of nostalgia, feeling as your grandparents did fifty years ago.

Your options are endless as far as locations go when planning a wedding in England. Anything from the grandeur of a castle to the quaintest of cottages and anything in between can be yours. One option that you may not have considered for a wedding venue and accommodation are the grand country estates available through cottage rental agencies like Sykes Cottages. There is no shortage of lovely English wedding cottages to choose from for your big day and they offer so much more than just a lovely location (though they definitely offer that as well!)

The Croft

The English county estate or country house has been a part of the English landscape for centuries. Generally designed as country playgrounds for the rich or stately homes for the landed gentry they are characterised by elaborate architecture and manicured grounds. Visions of Downton Abbey should be coming to mind – beautiful gardens, elegant ladies, and gentlemen in top hats.

The beauty of an English country wedding held at one of these estates today is that anything goes. You can make it as grand or as relaxed as you choose. Smaller wedding parties could be accommodated indoors, with some homes having grand dining rooms, while larger celebrations can be accommodated outdoors under a marquee. Filled with twinkling fairy lights, candles, and delicate china you will quickly forget that you are in a tent.

If you’ve never visited the UK you may be wondering where you should hold the most important day of your life. Again, you are only limited by your imagination. If you have a large number of guests travelling with you from abroad you might want to consider the areas surrounding London, where most guests are likely to fly in to. The counties of Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, and Surry are all popular destinations, renowned for picturesque villages and countryside.

Alternatively, a more adventurous couple may choose to hire a cottage in the Lake District, a beautiful area in the north east of England that is filled with sweeping mountains and sparkling lakes. The Lake District served as inspiration for some of England’s best known poets and artists, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and Beatrix Potter. The area even features in Arthurian legend, many believing it to be the Grail kingdom of Listeneise. You would struggle to find anywhere more romantic than this.

While you are considering the perfect place to hold your upcoming wedding, do add England to the list. Here a wedding like no other can be yours, filled with romance and beauty, luxury and elegance. Whether you choose a quaint cottage as your perfect location, or a grand country estate, rest assured that your day will be perfect and set the stage for a wonderful future together as husband and wife.

Jason & Kisha’s Travel Themed Wedding

Jason and Kisha wanted to share their love for travel with family and friends, so they decided to marry in Costa Rica. In keeping with the travel themed wedding, they set the ambience for guests with engraved compasses, suitcases, maps and postcards. <!–more–> They also added details that captured the essence of Costa Rica, which was very special to them because they had taken their first trip together there.

“One of my favorite authors is Ernst Hemingway and I thought, what better theme to express who we are than a travel theme?” says Kisha. This is where she came up with the idea for integrating Hemingway into the ceremony and reception. The couple’s passion for travel spilled over into their honeymoon as well!

They split up their honeymoon into several mini-honeymoons to make the experience last longer. The week before the wedding, they relaxed in Costa Rica at the beautiful Four Seasons and following the wedding they traveled to Napa Valley for the week to experience the best of California’s wine country. A few months later, they spent time together at the Four Seasons Nevis and Singita Lodge in South Africa!

Enjoy the travels and the gorgeous photos by El Velo Photography!

Christina & Conrad’s Fantastic Florence Wedding

Ah, the romance of Italy!

Christina and Conrad’s destination wedding was accented by such simple, yet beautiful details that created an evening of sweet ambiance. The evening was lighted by a floating layer of candles in the pool of the elegant Riva Lofts, where guests gathered for the ceremony and outdoor reception. Rosapaola Lucibelli Photography captured the splash of reds, such as the bride’s contemporary dress, greens, in the trees surrounding the reception, and whites, like the of orchids scattered throughout. Red berries added color to the centerpieces and place settings, while graciously covering the tiered tart cakes with adorned signs for each. <!–more–>

Enjoy the beauty of Florence!

Kim & Adam’s Fabulous Multicultural Yacht Wedding

An extravagant affair at sea marries Vietnamese culture with Jewish tradition

The incredible photos below are by the uber-talented Table 4 weddings, and a few are by their second shooter, Kim Le of Kim Le Photography. And you absolutely must must must also watch this insanely creative video by Joe Simon of Joe Simon Productions. When the wedding video is elevated to art like this, it makes me terribly happy. <!–more–>

As the product of a multi-ethnic marriage, nothing warms my heart more than seeing a beautiful wedding that seamlessly blends and honors different cultural traditions — especially when it’s done in super-elegant style! For Adam and Kim of New York City, their dream wedding meant inviting 100 friends and family members to spend 3 days aboard the Seadream yacht, for a celebration that included a traditional tea ceremony, a ketubah (Jewish marriage contract) and a chuppah (Jewish wedding canopy), fireworks (!), lots of groovy tunes, great food, and FUN!

Christine and Jonathon’s Paris Circus Wedding

An intimate celebration in the City of Lights unites two fiery and unique performance artists

It’s not often that the job descriptions of our brides and grooms include “defying gravity”. But this Wedding Porn Wednesday is truly unique, featuring an extraordinary couple whose sweet Paris wedding was anything but conventional. <!–more–>

Christine and Jonathon decided on a destination wedding because they both love travel. Most days, you’ll find Jonathon in New York, DC, Boston, or on the Santa Monica Pier, teaching students to fly while running his famous trapeze school.

{*What’s Wedding Porn Wednesday?}

And Christine, an accomplished arial artist, is usually doing something like this…

c1

…or this…

c2

It sure beats an office job, huh? Everything that these two do is an adventure, and their wedding was no different. They invited a small group of friends to meet them in Paris. Everyone was instructed to wear white, as they were all considered part of the wedding party. The day began with all of the women gathering to help Christine get ready, while the men hit the streets of Paris to buy food, flowers, and wine.

b-6-prep

Christine’s dress was designed for her by Jonathon, in collaboration with costumer Adele Satori, who creates unique wearable art for music videos, performances, fashion and film.

b-4-prep2

Their wedding fell on a perfect sunny summer day in Paris. Jonathon eagerly waited in the hotel lobby for all of the guests and his bride, where they enjoyed champagne and fruit to start the festivities.

aa7

Then the entire bridal party walked through the streets of Paris together to reach the ceremony site, a gazebo in a park that the couple had chosen for the occasion. With no permits or special plans, the bridal party had to convince park-goers to clear the area so they could begin!

b-1

Christine and Jonathon both cried tears of joy as they recited their heartfelt vows to each other. They had no officiant, and the ceremony was non-denominational. Guests sat in a circle around them.

aa6

Each of the guests was asked to bring a piece of ribbon with their wishes for the couple written on it. One by one, they tied the wrists of the bride and groom together with their prayers. Christine and Jonathon kept the ribbons as momentos.

aa

Finally, Jonathon sang a song that he had written for Christine.

b-2

Some of the guests who knew the song chimed in at the chorus, surprising and delighting the bride.

aa5

aa4

After the ceremony, the happily married couple and their bridal party moved to a grassy area of the park for a perfect Paris picnic, filled with food, wine and laughter.

Congratulations and many thanks to Christine and Jonathon for sharing their very special and beautiful day with us! And if you’re in LA, New York, Boston, or DC, be sure to check out Jonathon’s Trapeze School New York for life’s second greatest adventure (after marriage)…flying!!

Whitney and John’s Eco-Chic Vegas Vows

A destination wedding at a Nevada nature preserve is full of sweet personal details

Whitney and John knew they wanted a destination wedding in Vegas that wouldn’t feel like a typical Vegas wedding at all. So they chose to have both ceremony and reception at the gorgeous Springs Preserve, a 180-acre cultural institution dedicated to sustainability and dotted with environmentally friendly LEED buildings. With a beautiful jewel-toned palette, sophisticated floral design, and tons of personalized details, the look of this wedding is modern, chic, and unforgettable. Talented photographer Chelsea Nicole captured every perfect moment. <!–more–>

Whitney is wearing a Vera Wang wedding dress. For her something blue, she had her cobbler paint the soles of her Stewart Weitzman shoes. The deep cobalt color even matches the beautiful jewel tone palette of the rest of the wedding.

The bride and groom were so excited for their honeymoon in Africa, which would include everything from Ugandan mountain gorillas to beach time in the Maldives, that they named their tables after different destinations on their itinerary.

Hilary and Dave’s Laid-Back Seaside Celebration

Flip-flops, starfish, and a happily expecting bride in an intimate and casual beachfront wedding.

Photographer Gabrielle Fox first met Hilary and Dave when they hired her to do a maternity shoot while Hilary was pregnant with their first child. Two years later, with another little one on the way, the couple reunited with their fave photographer when she shot their beautiful wedding at a private estate on the California coast. <!–more–>  The event was a perfect combination of relaxed fun and gorgeous details, with abundant floral and cacti arrangements by Stem Design Studio. With all the ladies in beachy, flowing dresses, and the men in khakis and linens, the mood was stylish, sunny, intimate and fun.
