Lemon Sunshine: Megan & Justin’s Yellow Wedding

A Newport Beach wedding filled with sunny joy and smiles

When I spotted Megan and Justin’s sweet and sunny wedding on OneWed, it instantly made me smile. Everything about this adorable young couple and their wedding just screams *fun*! From the bright and whimsical lemon blossom bouquets to the sunny textile prints of the tablecloths, this is a feel-good party with charm to spare. Talented up-and-coming photo Alicia Danielle captured every detail.

The bridesmaids wore matching handmade hair accessories — they’re just like the brooch on the sash of Megan’s dress!

Justin’s super-cool, unique black wedding band is made of Tungsten, a metal that’s stronger than gold or platinum. Tungsten mining also has less environmental impact than gold or silver mining.

Megan’s dress proves that modest can be fabulous! LDS weddings call for somewhat conservative attire, and Megan rocks a sweet short-sleeved design that’s fresh, modern, and beautiful.

This is some of the most eco-friendly bridesmaids attire I’ve seen in a while. Are the dresses made of bamboo? Are they vintage? Nope. But those flattering little black dresses, cute gray sweaters, and comfy black flats are absolute wardrobe staples, which means that that these bridesmaids will *really* wear them again and again. And one of the most Earth-friendly things you can do is to extend the lifecycle of all of the products you buy — it reduces your consumption and your overall carbon footprint.

The ceremony was held in Yorba Linda, followed by a reception at a private home in Newport Beach. And did we mention the scenery??

Notice how the circles in the tablecloth match the whimsical cake design, which echoes the round shape of the lemon slices in the vase. Coordinating shapes and colors this way gives the whole wedding an effortlessly put-together vibe.

Thanks again to Alicia Danielle for sending me these pics on short notice and being such a wonderful photographer and great sport!

Sweet Vegan Wedding Treats

Sweet E’s Mini Bakeshop introduces custom couture vegan cakes and cupcakes!

When Hollywood celebs get a cupcake craving, they turn to Erica Tucker, proprietor and chief cake master at Sweet E’s Mini Bakeshop.

sweete-erica

The charming star of The Food Network’s Cupcake Wars is a genius with sweets of all kinds, but she’s best known for her mini cupcakes: perfect 2-3 bite confections that let you indulge your sweet tooth without packing on the pounds. Below, reality TV star Audrina enjoys a mini cupcake tower for her 25th birthday.

sweete-audrina

I’ve been a fan of Sweet E’s for a long time, but since I’m a flexi-vegan-tarian (that’s my word for having the heart of a vegan but the cravings of a carnivore), I sometimes want to skip the butter and eggs that are in their regular cupcakes. So I was thrilled to hear that due to popular demand, Erica’s now whipping up vegan versions of her popular minis, along with custom vegan wedding cakes and dessert tables. Woo-hoo!

sweete-purple-minis

The vegan minis come in delicious flavors like red velvet, chocolate peanut butter, snickerdoodle, and coconut lime, and can be made in any color, style, or theme you can dream up.

sweete-psychedelic

How would you customize Sweet E’s treats for a wedding, engagement party, or bridal shower? The fun tie-dye colored minis above would be great for a psychedelic bohemian-themed wedding. And these simple and elegant wedding cake and dessert table treats can also be made with all-vegan ingredients for a more traditional event.

And check out the purse cake and mini designer-themed cupcakes below — perfect for a fashion-conscious bride at her shower…

…or these bachelor/bachelorette themed cuppies. Yes, those are edible *handcuffs*!

In fact, allof Erica’s awesome Sweet E’s designs would be fabulous as vegan treats. Except for maybe the one below…(!)

Visit Sweet E’s online to see all the varieties of cakes and cupcakes available for weddings. You can also order Sweet E’s vegan cupcakes to be delivered anywhere in the Los Angeles area, and Erica will even FedEx cake pops, cookies, and other treats to you nationwide. Follow Sweet E’s on Twitter to hear about other exciting new sweets, and look for Erica on the new season of Cupcake Wars, premiering on The Food Network on June 29th.

DIY Wedding Cakes

Martha Martha Martha! The DIY Queen shows you how to make your own wedding cake

These sweet DIY wedding cakes and other creative confections are from Martha Stewart Weddings. Yes, you really can make these yourself (or pass the job on to a crafty bridesmaid or relative!) My favorites are the frozen sorbet bombe cakes below. They’re so elegant and pretty, and prefect for a hot summer wedding.  Also pictured, a white chocolate panel cake with golden raspberries.

For a green wedding, I’d make these cakes with organic ingredients and fruit from our local farmer’s market. Below, a crushed candy cake that’s super easy and fun to make, and mini chocolate cakes.

CakeWrecks!

A site featuring cakes gone horribly, hilariously wrong

Who knew that wedding cake disasters and other hideous baker’s mistakes could be so gosh-darn entertaining? All of these cakes are from CakeWrecks.com, my new favorite destination for guaranteed ginormous belly laughs.

In order of appearance:

  • Best Wishes Suzanne Under Neat that We will Miss you This is the cover of the Cake Wrecks book. Rightfully.
  • CLASS 2008 OF Go on to do great things surely will this class.
  • Happy Barthy {Period} It’s not a barthy party without the cake punctuation.
  • Congratulations Michael on your Conformation Depending on your religious views, this may or may not be a spelling error.

c-3

And a happy 60th to you too, a%*hole.

You were always a crappy dad, dad!! Now have a…um…chocolate pudding pastry.

c-2

Both of these special-occasion cakes make me nauseous in their own special way. Do not look directly into the doll’s eyes.

c3

I hear that Carrie’s Gracturations was a real milestone. And poor Albrecht. Under-appricated, even on his birthday.

And then there are the Wedding Cake Wrecks. Holy cow. CakeWrecks files these under “Bride/Baker Communications 101″. Apparently, each of these cakes was submitted by a bride who brought the left-side photo to her baker, and asked for something similar. They got right-hand side results.

What would you do if your cake turned out like one of these?! Not much you can do but laugh and hope it tastes better than it looks, right? And last but not least, below are the divorce cakes (!!!)

b7

The ring is in its own tiny coffin. Holy morbid. And the upside-down cake below? Those are the helpless, crushed groom’s legs peeping out from underneath, all Wicked Witch-style. P.S. Your sister says hi.

b6

Even funnier than the cakes themselves are the comments from CakeWrecks creator Jen Yates. She’s a cake wreck-commenting genius! Follow her on Twitter for updates on new cake disasters, or submit a photo of a cake wreck that you’ve spotted.

Which one’s your favorite? Have you ever seen a real-life cake wreck?

Does The Word “Wedding” = Higher Prices?

A funny video illustrates the wedding pricing conspiracy theory

The Internets are brimming with anecdotal tales of caterers, florists, and limo services that gave higher quotes when asked about a “wedding” rather than a regular ”party”. The conspiracy theory goes something like this: Everyone knows that brides and grooms expect their weddings to be expensive, once-in-a-lifetime events, and therefore vendors can charge a boatload of cash for the same exact services they’d normally price way lower. The gentleman in the video below was particularly defensive about this potential rip-off. (Warning: Some NSFW profanity here — though it’s hardly offensive with a British accent.)

I know a lot of good folks in the wedding business, and they work really hard for what often amounts to pretty narrow margins (like this talented florist). And this concept about pricing conjures visions of greedy wedding vendors conspiring to rip off their innocent clients while sitting on piles of cash and laughing, all mwaah-ha-ha-ha-like. It’s a tempting theory to buy into, but it seems to me that most products and services provided for weddings actually are more labor-intensive or complex than a similar, non-wedding job. Your Uncle Marty might take amazing vacation pics, but would he be able to handle the grueling 12-hour days and intricate photo editing that real wedding photography pros do? I’d guess not. And wedding invitations and favors are usually more customized and of higher quality than their birthday party counterparts. Then again, there are certain things that just cost what they cost. Catering is about food and service, no matter what the occasion. And a limo is a limo is a limo, whether you’re going to a wedding, a nightclub, or a funeral.

What do you think? Does the word “wedding” auto-inflate prices? Brides: Have you had any personal experiences with this? Vendors: Do you charge the same for weddings and non-wedding events? Sound off in the comments below.

The Broke-Ass Cake Collection Launches!

They made it official with The Kick-Ass Cake Bash

What do you get when you take a room full of indescribably good-looking people, add heaping helpings of the most delicious cakes you’ve ever tasted and an amazing dessert bar that’s (almost) too pretty to eat, throw in a red carpet, some fabulously creative cocktails, crazy photo staging areas, models walking around in Alfred Angelo wedding dresses, and a rap performance by The Broke-Ass Bride and her Fresh Hubby?

You get one Kick-Ass Cake Bash!

bac

Photos of the Broke-Ass Cake Collection taken with my Blackberry. They don't do the darned gorgeous cakes any justice.

Last night was the official launch of The Broke-Ass Cake Collection, a brilliant collaboration between baker-to-the-stars Fantasy Frostings and The Broke-Ass Bride. The party was a hootin’ hollering good time, and I’ve got the sugar hangover to prove it. But more importantly, the cakes were freakin’ delicious and insanely beautiful! Now that I’ve tried these cakes and seen them in person, I don’t know why anybody in the LA area would even consider buying another wedding cake. (And by the way, I did sample just about every other cake in the LA area when planning my own wedding here, and I may just have sampled every Broke-Ass cake at the party last night. All in the name of research, of course.)

Blurry phone pics of party people:

Mr. Frostings gives the crowd a warm welcome. There must have been 400 people there!

A film noir rendering of The Broke-Ass Bride & The Fresh Hubby. They were introducing the evening's sponsors. With a rap. That rhymed every vendor's name with something badass and funny. This, you had to see for yourself.

I cannot stress enough how inexplicably attractive the crowd was. It was like everyone thought they were going to an audition for America's Next Top Model, but then found themselves at a cool party with cake instead.
